What is soft tissue surgery?
- Surgery involving the gums, cheek, tongue or lip
What are some examples?
- Frenectomy
- Lip
- The lip may be abnormally attached to the gums causing the gums to “pull up”
- Frenectomy procedure removes the abnormal attachment
- Tongue
- The tongue may be attached to the gum and bone very tightly causing difficulty in speech (“tongue tied”)
- Frenectomy procedure removes the attachment making the tongue more mobile
- Denture
- The attachment of the cheek to the gums may not be ideal for a good denture fit
- Repositioning these attachments make the denture more comfortable and may improve their fit
- Lip
- Building up soft tissue
- When the gums are thin, thicker parts of the gums (usually the roof of the mouth) will be grafted to the area of the thinner gums to increase gum thickness
- Helps decrease sensitivity around implants
