What are dental implants?
- Implants are titanium or ceramic posts that are inserted into the jaw bone
- Teeth consist of a root (within the bone) and crown (the part that you see). A dental implant serves as a fixed root or anchor
Reasons to consider dental implants:
- Closest restoration to a natural tooth
- Maintain bone within the area after tooth extraction
- Can be used to anchor other dental prosthesis such as crown and bridge, dentures (removable or non-removable) and for other reconstructive goals (for example treatment after cysts, tumors, cancer)
- Significantly increase stability of an upper or lower denture
Types of Dental Implants
- Traditional implant:
- The tooth is extracted and an implant is placed after a period of healing (3-4 months)
- Immediate implant:
- The tooth is extracted and an implant is placed at the same time of extraction (same day)
- Multiple implants:
- Used to restore multiple missing teeth
- Can be used to support a bridge, denture (removable or non-removable)
