Why would an individual need bone grafting?
- To rebuild bone that was previously lost
- To facilitate a more ideal restoration
Reasons for bone loss:
- Long standing missing teeth
- Gum (gingivitis) and bone (periodontitis) loss
- Dental extraction
- Trauma
- Cysts, tumors, cancer
Why is bone loss a problem?
- Implants require a certain width and height of bone for placement
- Bone loss can invade other structures such as nerves, sinuses and other vital structures making implant placement or other procedures difficult
- Bone loss can lead to an ill-fitting prosthesis such as dentures
What is bone grafting?
- Maintaining bone volume or rebuilding gums and the underlying bone structure using a variety of techniques
- Sinus lift
- Guided bone regeneration
- Socket preservation at the time of dental extraction
Where does the graft material come from?
- Allograft (same species):
- In some cases, bone from a bone bank (from another human) can be used to reconstruct and build up bone
- The cells are removed leaving a crystalline structure and treated so that it is safe to use
- Autograft (yourself):
- In some cases, bone is harvested from the following areas and transplanted in your mouth
- jaw
- hip
- knee
- gums

- Xenograft (different species):
